About Joana

Lisbon born Joana Seara began her studies at the Academia de Música de Santa Cecília and the National Conservatory before taking the BMus, MMus and the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She is very thankful to the Gulbenkian Foundation, the Wingate Foundation, the E. M. Behrens Charitable Trust and the Worshipful Company of Barbers for having sponsored her studies. She was also the receiver of a Sybil Tutton Award and the Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers Music Prize 2005.

Joana made her debut in opera in 2004 with Zerlina (Netherlands). Since then, she has performed in Europe mostly in the baroque and classical repertoire, with recent incursions into the 19th century repertoire including Nannetta (Falstaff) and Gretel (Hansel und Gretel). In London, she was Gretel for Opera Holland Park and Damigella (Coronation of Poppea) for English National Opera. She understudied Gretel at the 2008 Glyndebourne Festival. Joana has played Despina (Cosi fan tutte) in Holland, England and Ireland and Galatea (Acis and Galatea) in France. More recently, she sang Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, in Lisbon.

Joana has worked with orchestras including the Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin, the King's Consort and the London Mozart Players. In Portugal, she has collaborated with the Gulbenkian Orchestra (cond. Laurence Foster), the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra (cond. Pedro Carneiro), the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra (cond. Augustin Dumay) and the Concerto Campestre (cond. Pedro Castro). She has also sung at the Ile de France, Ambronay, Mafra and Varna festivals with the Divine Sospiro Baroque Orchestra (cond. Enrico Onofri).

Joana performs regularly in the Músicos do Tejo's opera productions (cond. Marcos Magalhães / dir. Luca Aprea) at the Centro Cultural de Belém, having played Vannella (Lo frate 'nnamorato) and Vespina (La Spinalba). They are about to launch a CD of arias once sung by the 18th century Portuguese opera singer Luísa Todi.
